The Challenge

A reputation crisis doesn't start with a headline. It starts with a handful of angry Trustpilot reviews and a Reddit thread you didn't see. By the time it hits the news, the narrative is already set. You need a system that cross-references review sentiment with web mentions so you catch problems while they're still manageable.

Context

What to Monitor

Trustpilot signals:

  • Recent 1-star and 2-star reviews (potential crises)
  • Rating trend direction (improving or declining)
  • New complaint themes that haven't appeared before
  • Review velocity changes (sudden spikes in negative reviews)

Google Search signals:

  • News articles mentioning the brand + negative keywords (complaint, lawsuit, breach, outage)
  • Reddit or forum threads about bad experiences
  • Competitor comparison articles where brand is mentioned negatively
  • Any recent PR crises or controversies

Monitoring Strategy

  1. Pull 2 pages of recent Trustpilot reviews to check current sentiment
  2. Search Google for "[brand] complaints" and "[brand] problems" (last 7 days)
  3. Search Google for "[brand] reviews" to find third-party review coverage
  4. Cross-reference themes between Trustpilot reviews and web mentions
  5. Assign a reputation risk level: Low / Medium / High / Critical
  6. Send the report to Slack with actionable next steps

What Counts as a Valid Result

  • Only surface issues that appear in multiple sources (review + web mention)
  • Distinguish between ongoing known issues and genuinely new concerns
  • Include links to sources so the team can investigate
  • Prioritize recency: last 7 days matters more than last 30
