SEC Financial Research
Pull quarterly financials straight from SEC filings and build a clean spreadsheet — no copy-pasting from EDGAR.
The Challenge
Pulling financial data from SEC EDGAR is tedious. You find the filing, click through the HTML, copy numbers into a spreadsheet, then repeat for every quarter. Comparing trends across 6-8 quarters can eat an entire afternoon — and one wrong cell reference throws everything off.
What This Prompt Does
Find Filings
Search SEC EDGAR for 10-K and 10-Q filings by ticker and date range
Extract XBRL Data
Pull revenue, margins, EPS, and balance sheet data from structured filings
Build Spreadsheet
Organize everything into a multi-tab Google Sheets document
Spot Trends
Calculate growth rates and margins across quarters automatically
The Prompt
The Prompt
Task
Use @SEC/Search FilingsName it "SEC/Search Filings" and call it with @SEC/Search Filings to find recent 10-K and 10-Q filings for a public company, extract financial data with @SEC/Get Financial Summary and @SEC/Get Financial StatementsName it "SEC/Get Financial Statements" and call it with @SEC/Get Financial Statements, then organize the results into a @Google Sheets spreadsheet with quarter-over-quarter comparisons.
Example: Pull the last 8 quarters of financial data for Cloudflare (NET) and build a spreadsheet tracking revenue growth, gross margin, and operating expenses.
Tools
- @SEC/Search Filings — Find 10-K and 10-Q filings by ticker symbol and date range
- @SEC/Get Financial Summary — Get high-level metrics like revenue, net income, EPS, and total assets from XBRL data
- @SEC/Get Financial Statements — Extract full income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements
- @Google Sheets — Create and populate a spreadsheet with the extracted financial data
- @google_search — Find the company's most recent earnings call highlights or analyst commentary for context
Input
The user will provide a ticker symbol (or company name) and optionally specify which metrics or time periods they care about.
Example: "Pull Datadog (DDOG) financials for the last 2 years" or "Compare SNOW vs DDOG revenue growth over the last 6 quarters"
Context
What to Extract
For each filing period, pull:
- Revenue and revenue growth (QoQ and YoY)
- Gross profit and gross margin %
- Operating income/loss and operating margin %
- Net income/loss and EPS (basic and diluted)
- Total assets, total liabilities, shareholders' equity
- Cash and equivalents from the balance sheet
Research Strategy
- Search SEC for the company's 10-Q and 10-K filings over the requested time period
- For each filing, call Get Financial Summary for the quick metrics overview
- For detailed breakdowns, call Get Financial Statements requesting StatementsOfIncome, BalanceSheets, and StatementsOfCashFlows
- Use Google Search to find the latest earnings call summary or analyst consensus estimates
- Organize all data into a Google Sheets spreadsheet with one column per quarter
What Counts as a Valid Result
- All numbers must come directly from SEC filings — never estimate or fabricate financial data
- Note the exact period of report for each data point
- If a metric isn't available in XBRL data, mark it as "N/A" rather than guessing
- Calculate derived metrics (margins, growth rates) from the raw numbers
Output
Google Sheets spreadsheet with these tabs:
Tab 1 — Income Statement: | Metric | Q1 2024 | Q2 2024 | Q3 2024 | Q4 2024 | YoY Change | |--------|---------|---------|---------|---------|------------| | Revenue | $X | $X | $X | $X | +X% | | Gross Profit | $X | $X | $X | $X | +X% | | Operating Income | $X | $X | $X | $X | +X% | | Net Income | $X | $X | $X | $X | +X% |
