There is a running joke on marketing teams: everyone agrees that data-driven decisions are important, and nobody has time to actually look at the data. GA4 sits open in a browser tab that you swear you will get to after this meeting. Then after the next one. Then it is Thursday and you still do not know what happened with traffic this week.

I used to think the problem was discipline. Smart people know they should check their analytics. They just need to build better habits, right? After watching this play out at a few dozen companies, I have changed my mind. The problem is not discipline. The problem is that the process of extracting useful information from GA4 is tedious enough that busy people will always find something more urgent to do instead. The solution is not willpower. The solution is automation.

What "Automation" Actually Means Here

Let me be specific, because "analytics automation" means different things to different people. I am not talking about building a data warehouse or setting up BigQuery exports or learning dbt. Those are fine tools for data teams. Marketing teams need something simpler.

The automation I am talking about has three steps:

  1. Pull the right data from GA4 at the right time
  2. Analyze it enough to surface what matters
  3. Deliver it to the place where people will actually see it

  • Which channels are driving the most sessions?
  • Which channels drive the most engaged sessions? (These are often different.)
  • Are there channels with high traffic but terrible bounce rates? (This is wasted money or effort.)
  • Are there channels with low traffic but excellent engagement? (This is an opportunity to invest.)

Here is why this matters. Most teams default to budget allocation by volume. "Paid search brings the most traffic, so more budget to paid search." Except when paid search has a 70% bounce rate and that one organic social channel has 30%. Session for session, the social traffic is worth way more. But you only see that if you look at engagement and volume side by side, and almost nobody does because it requires building custom reports.

  • Wasted ad spend: Campaigns where the cost is high and the GA4 bounce rate is over 70%. That money bought clicks that produced nothing.
  • Scaling opportunities: Campaigns with low spend but strong on-site engagement. These are worth increasing budget on.
